KL847 - Suru kilim

268 x 341 cm

Contemporary Anatolian 'Suru' kilim.

Most of our kilims are vintage, but we have commissioned some contemporary ‘Suru’ kilims. Suru is the Turkish word for flock and the intermittent loop pile knots of high grade wool look like miniature sheep! Available in a palette of soft muted colours to help create a sense of calm and tranquility.

129 x 196 cm

Vintage Boucherouite rag rug.

Multicoloured pyramids and horizontal stripes give this kilim a jaunty air, not unlike a pastel version of the pulsing colour block paintings by Stanley Whitney.  Nice blue and yellow tassels at either end of the rug.

Kilims

A kilim is a type of flat woven rug, often made of wool and characterised by its tightly woven durable design and lack of pile. Kilims have a rich history with origins tracing back to nomadic cultures. Most of our kilims are vintage but we have commissioned some contemporary ‘Suru’ kilims. Suru is the Turkish word for flock and the intermittent loop pile knots of high grade wool look just like miniature sheep. Suru is available in a palette of soft muted colours to help create a sense of calm and tranquility.

Within this type of floor covering Larusi has included the much sought after and increasingly rare Tuareg rugs made by the desert dwellers of the shifting sands of the Sahara. Trade routes between North Africa and the Middle East were once dominated by these resilient tribespeople. Their expertise, passed down through time, found expression in these rugs woven from palm reeds, palm tree fibres and the supple hides of camels and goats. Today these geometric patterns transcend time and harmonise effortlessly in contemporary spaces.

KL905 - Tuareg rug

204 x 312 cm

Vintage Tuareg rug.

Tuareg rug with dense intricately woven decorative bands featuring dispersed diamond patterns

Tuareg mats and runners were handcrafted by nomadic tribes from across the Sahara desert, hailing from Mali, Niger, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya and Mauritania. Their muted palette echoes the colours of the Saharan landscape. This combined with their reed and camel or goat leather construction (the only materials available) lends the rugs their tactile, organic feel.
